Description:
This photo pair features the crossing of Hogan Creek under the park road about a mile before it reaches the Sanctuary River. In 1925, in the earliest days of construction by the Alaska Road Commission a bridge was built over Hogan Creek. It was replaced with two large culverts in 1983. Notice the patch of trees that had grown on both sides of the road by 2010, visible in the middle ground. These trees have developed on the soils near the water course of Hogan Creek, which are likely warmer than soils not dissected by the creek. Look to the north-facing slope on the left side of the frame. Not much tree growth there. The soils of the north-facing slope have remained cold enough to restrict successful spruce growth.
