Description:
This photo pair shows the site of a small ski area, viewed from a large pullout near Milepost 7 of the Park Road. Look carefully in the very middle of the photo to spot a few skiers (which look like very thin spruce trees). During World War II, the park was used as a recreation site for soldiers. They would come in on the train and stay at the McKinley Park Hotel which operated year-round at that time. Over the 66 year period captured by these photos, spruce trees and shrubs have filled-in and expanded upslope. Look especially in areas where trees occurred in 1944 to see the change in density. The small drainage valleys on the high slopes of the mountain show dramatic expansion of shrubs as well.
