Increasing vegetation on river bars
This photo pair is looking south up the Muddy River west of Wonder Lake. This is one of the few images of gravel bars that shows destruction of patches of vegetation over the interval: note the small patch of poplar in the foreground of the 2004 image is the only remnants of the larger patch of vegetation visible in the 1976 photo. Although that vegetation patch was eroded, over the same period the vegetation on the left side of the river further upstream has continued its successional trajectory, changing from scattered low shrubs in 1976 to a more closed canopy of poplar and tall willow shrubs in 2005.
