Description:
The 1931 photo shows Alaska Road Commission laborers "hand-grubbing" the route of the Denali Park Road at mile 62, in the vicinity of Stony Dome. Hand-grubbing was the first step in the road building process after surveying and consisted of walking through and removing obstacles such as rocks, roots, and vegetation. The 2001 photo, taken 70 years later, shows the fully constructed road. What a lot of work!
