This photo pair overlooks Horseshoe Lake (foreground), the Nenana River (midground), and the start of the Nenana Canyon. In the early 1970s construction of the George Parks Highway was near complete. The light colored rock visible in the earlier photo was blasted to prevent rock fall to the newly constructed road below, and the overburden was deposited as fill on nearby private land. By 2010, these scars are less apparent as vegetation reestablished where possible. The after effects of highway construction are also apparent in this photo - many business have sprung up in the area between the Denali park entrance and the Nenana Canyon offering services to highway travelers and park visitors. The edges of Horseshoe lake have receded in the years between photographs, allowing vegetation to colonize the new soils.
