This pair of aerial photos shows an area in the drainage of Big Creek near the Teklanika R. There are a few locations on the slopes of the peak in the foreground where an expansion of shrubs upwards in elevation has occurred during the interval captured by these photographs. To the right of the summit there is a gully feature leading to the ridge. Note that in the 1976 photo there is an oval-shaped open, light-colored rocky area with three distinct dark green clumps below it (these are alders, Alnus viridis). Compare this area in the 2005 photo, and you can see that there has been an expansion of green shrubs into the rocky area and up the gully feature to the left of it, with dark green alders reaching close to the ridge. Can you find other areas in this photo where shrubs had become established by 2005 in areas that were previously tundra in 1976?
