This is an aerial view looking west down the Thorofare River just above its confluence with the McKinley River, which can be seen in the background. The recent photo is in the autumn, complicating the comparison to the earlier photo which was taken in the summer. However, we know from recent research in this area that considerable changes in the vegetation have occurred there in recent years, with a dramatic increase in the number and distribution of poplars, along with increased vegetation on barren gravels and the establishment of shrubs in areas that were previously occupied by meadow vegetation types.
