Succession following fire
The gentle slope above the lake in this photo pair was burned in the years prior to the 1976 photo. Close inspection of the original high-resolution image of the area that shows up as a reddish color contains large numbers of down fire-killed spruce trees and standing-dead spruce snags. The forest has grown up in the years between the two image dates and the relatively dense growth of spruce and broadleaf trees visible in the 2005 image stands in contrast to the sparser, low-statured vegetation of the 1976 image. This shows a relatively rapid succession from open burn to young forest over this 30 period.
