Park staff took the image at left in 2005 in an area last known to have burned in a 1986 fire (56,288 acres). An abundance of downed logs remain as evidence of the 1986 fire, and spruce and aspen have established. Just a few weeks after the 2005 photo was taken, the area was burned again by the Highpower Fire (115,878 acres). The image at right was taken in 2006, one year post fire. Notice the abundance of bare soil and the mosaic of burn severity allowing for the survival of select trees.
