Increasing vegetation on river bars
Description:
This pair of photos illustrate fairly dramatic changes in a section of lower Hult Creek over the period 1976-2005. To help orient yourself to this pair of images, note that the small curving side channel flowing from the main channel towards the left side of the frame near the top of the images have the same shape indicating this is the identical channel. Note the degree to which the channel has narrowed over the years, with vegetation filling in up to the active channel where water is flowing . Specifically, the tear-shaped gravel bar downstream of the s-curve was apparently colonized by stringers of alder in the first photo, but was completely vegetated by the time the second photo was taken.
