Description:
This photo pair features the dog kennel operation in the Historic Headquarters District. Harry Karstens, the first superintendent of what was then Mt. McKinley National Park purchased the first National Park Service dog team in 1922 for use in winter transportation. The National Park Service has maintained kennels for this purpose ever since. At the top left of the photos, the corner of a roof awning is visible. This is part of the "dog feed cache and cookhouse" originally built in 1930 and moved to its current location in 1938. As you can see in the later photo, the building has been added to but still largely maintains its original appearance and function.
