Description:
This photo pair was taken from the Alaska Railroad Depot looking north. The railroad station (large building in the upper left of the frame in the 1970s photo) was constructed in 1940, but later torn down and replaced with the current structure. Although the buildings have changed, a visitor arriving to the park by train in 1920, 1950, 1970, and 2000 probably experienced a similar feeling of excitement. Notice what appears to be a dramatic invasion of shrubs into the alpine on the mountain in the upper right corner of the frame.
